Îles de la Madeleine (Island of Madeleine), Dakar, Senegal

This island off the coast of West Africa was created from volcanic activity resulting in columnar jointing, a geological structure where sets of intersecting closely spaced fractures, referred to as joints, result in the formation of a regular array of polygonal prisms, or columns of basalt. Basalt is a dark grey or black volcanic rock formed by solidification of magma. It can be dense or fine-grained and usually consists of plagioclase, augite and magnetite. This island, the smallest national park in the world, is now forbidden to visit due to a supposed haunting.
